Act Reviews 2024 / 2025 Season

DRINKING HABITS by Tom Smith Director: Tristesse James and James Stovold Colne Dramatic Society It was an absolute delight to return to Colne Little Theatre for their joyful production of Drinking Habits by Tom Smith. The theatre was already packed with an excited audience when I arrived to a warm welcome from Richard I’Anson and the Front of House Team, which is a testament to how well-regarded Colne Dramatics Society’s productions are by the community; and throughout the play the audience remained fully engaged, laughing and responding with glee as the various antics and revelations played out. I describe this production as “joyful” because that is very much the emotion that seemed to be predominantly present on the stage, every cast member clearly relishing being part of this funny and yet quite sweet piece of theatre. This joy swept through the audience, too, as we were taken along the journey with them. As always, there was a good attention to detail with the set, which also took the opportunity to add to the humour with the stainedglass window depicting a rather inebriated-looked Jesus, and a Last Supper featuring guest appearances from members of the cast – a symbol of the lovely comradery and fun clearly shared by the team. Congratulations to set builders James Stovold, Sue Hartley and Tristesse James (who I understand also designed the set as well as co-directing and starring as Sister Mary Catherine – what a feat!). One thing about the set I was unsure about was why smoke was coming out of the wardrobe - I wondered if this would be explained but it didn’t seem to be. However, it looked effective and intriguing despite there being no obvious reason for it.
