THE TURN of the SCREW by Jeffrey Hatcher adapted from the novel by Henry James & other Tales of Unease Furness Youth Theatre Furness Youth Theatre’s Three Tales of Unease was a theatrical delight, combining humour, suspense, and gothic horror to make a spectacular evening of drama. This talented group of young performers, ranging in age from 9 to 18, showcased their artistic prowess, supported by exceptional direction and a shared passion for storytelling. From the opening moments of The Phantom of the Forum to the chilling conclusion of The Turn of the Screw, the audience was treated to a showcase of raw talent, creativity, and professionalism. The evening opened with The Phantom of the Forum directed by Carol Stringer, a playful yet thought-provoking piece that explored themes of age, rejection, and the pursuit of artistic redemption. The plot revolved around a 76-year-old actor, dismissed as “too old” for a role, who boldly hijacks a production to present his own masterpiece. The young cast delivered their lines with impeccable timing, creating moments of comic brilliance that were punctuated by poignant reflections on the nature of creativity and resilience. The entire cast gave their all in this performance and it would be unjust to single anyone out, as they all acted their parts superbly. The second piece, Spooky Slumber Party directed by Emily Bispham, shifted gears, offering a clever blend of suspense and humour. Set against the relatable backdrop of a sleepover, the play wove together a series of eerie tales that sent shivers down the audience’s spines while eliciting moments of genuine laughter. The ensemble cast brought their A-game, showcasing the chemistry and camaraderie essential to this kind of storytelling. Each spooky tale was presented with finesse, blending tension and levity in perfect measure.
